Our understanding of the Universe is about to change…
The Large Hadron Collider - CERN
Doomsayers are trying to stop the largest and most advanced scientific experiment the world has ever seen, one that has the potential to unlock many secrets about our universe and answer questions physicists have asked for centuries. The LHC is an enormous particle accelerator and is not the first - just the biggest. Some doomsayers are afraid that it will create a micro black hole that will destroy the earth, a claim that scientists emphatically dismiss, while other religiously-motivated individuals want to stop the experiment, fearing that it may offer an explanation as to how our universe began. The LHC is scheduled to go live in August 2008 and will reach full operational capacity within a few months of that date.
This is exciting stuff people! Scientists are very likely about to make discoveries that will take their place along side those such as the law of gravity and the theory of relativity. What an exciting moment in the world’s history! I feel very fortunate to be able to witness this grand and historical event during my lifetime.
The following article is taken directly from the CERN website.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument near Geneva, where it spans the border between Switzerland and France about 100 m underground. It is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things. It will revolutionize our understanding, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.
Two beams of subatomic particles called ‘hadrons’ – either protons or lead ions – will travel in opposite directions inside the circular accelerator, gaining energy with every lap. Physicists will use the LHC to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang, by colliding the two beams head-on at very high energy. Teams of physicists from around the world will analyze the particles created in the collisions using special detectors in a number of experiments dedicated to the LHC.
There are many theories as to what will result from these collisions, but what’s for sure is that a brave new world of physics will emerge from the new accelerator, as knowledge in particle physics goes on to describe the workings of the Universe. For decades, the Standard Model of particle physics has served physicists well as a means of understanding the fundamental laws of Nature, but it does not tell the whole story. Only experimental data using the higher energies reached by the LHC can push knowledge forward, challenging those who seek confirmation of established knowledge, and those who dare to dream beyond the paradigm.

It’s also an amazing feat of ingenuity, engineering, and cooperation. CERN’s chart of project milestones from when it was first approved in 1994. There are some great photos in there.
Apparently, they’re throwing the switch in August, and the first collisions should occur a month later.
Well said as usual. This last paragraph:
“This is exciting stuff people! Scientists are very likely about to make discoveries that will take their place along side those such as the law of gravity and the theory of relativity. What an exciting moment in the world’s history! I feel very fortunate to be able to witness this grand and historical event during my lifetime.”
makes a science geek like me feel a little twinge. No I didn’t cry.
I’m very excited about this experiment too, as it will certainly be confirmation that the heavens declare the glory of God!
Its sad that these “doomsdayers” don’t realize that science is on their side, for with every new discovery we see God’s amazing handywork!
To SecularEarth - The whole thing makes me feel a little twinge… to think that there are over 2000 collaborating scientists from all around the world working on this project. They have created a brand new “internet” just to manage and share the data this experiment will provide… I mean, how truly fantastic. Sad to think that there are people in this world who would actually try to stop such a thing. It reminds me of the oppression some of the great minds in our history had to face. One thing is certain, as hard as they try they cannot stop progress. I for one am happy to stand by these modern-day heroes if for no other purpose than to be in the cheering section.
To Mike.e. - I can’t tell if you’re trying to be funny or if you are just trying to provoke some kind of negative response. If your intentions are the latter, I feel confident saying that I don’t think you’re going to get any kind of argumentative response here. If someone is bored they may take the time to respond to you (like I am) or more likely they’ll probably just ignore the comment. Either way, if you don’t agree with the content here why do you stay? Don’t get me wrong, you are more than welcome here, but I do encourage thoughtful and meaningful comments - that allows us to have an adult discussion on the subject. Childish “na-na-na-na-na” remarks aren’t really paid attention to here.
Cheers,
Moxie.
Prepare for the revolution, within ALL BRANCHES of science, technology, communications, . . . etc., and anything else you can think up! The answers to many theories are at hand, such as: The Big Bang, Bubble Universe(s), Accelerating Universe, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Parallel Dimensions (Multiverse), Gravity, Time, Unified Superstring, Supersymmetry Particles, Higgs Particle, Anti-Matter, Wormhole Formation, Blackhole Formation, AND MANY MORE! CERN LHC/ALICE/ATLAS, if all goes well, should begin rendering discoveries, between October 2008, and early-mid 2009! This will reconstruct large sectors within the ‘Standard Model’, which shall start a chain-reaction, that will ignite the mega-revolution. This could completely reconfigure the current Cosmological Model, and change everything right down to your perception of the view through your telescope at night!!! A Brave New World shall emerge from the ashes of our latest Dark Ages, without the shadow of past theoretical-mathematic representations (guessing) about the ‘Standard Model. The antiquated precepts (and this is what LHC is based/built upon), could only cause confusion and madness, which arguemented against a clear view! Clarity may prevail, and change everything! The LHC has already pre-planned a decade of precision energy upgrades (2009-2019), and this should render even more specific information! This could lead to a controlled and sustainable Nuclear and Plasma Fusion process, which would meet our future-world desperate energy needs!!! Also, this process would make possible Plasma-Driven Pulse-Detonation Fusion-Reactor-Engines, for Interstellar Spaceflight. With this type of magnitude power, put through a superconductivity step-up complex, this could make possible Time-Travel; or at least emergency electronic messaging, backward in Time! We cannot stay on Earth as a ‘race’ forever, that is impossible, because the odds are incredibly high, for the Sixth Mass Extinction to begin in our life-time! Some say we have entered the ‘End-Times’, and there are signs of just that!!! The serious debate must continue, within the public forum, this is our right and obligation to our future generations!?! Debate the risk potentials v/s the unimaginable outgrowth potentials, and if the answer is yes to proceed, then do so with extreme caution!!! In this comment, I am neither for, nor against; however, these are some of the general facts involved, and nothing more! I sincerely hope you share this expanding view, with as many friends and associates as you possible can! Thank You!
hmmmm, to the previous comment.
Optimism is a good quality, but controlled optimism. That is optimism with a little skepticism is also good. Time travel? Backwards in time text messeging. I like that, I can text myself who wont the Stanley Cup and then bet on it.
You actually mentioned that there is evidence of the “end times” and then 2 sentneces later said “these are some of the general facts involved, and nothing more”.
Gald i carry my Carl Sagan issued baloney detection kit with me.
